Harness your own brain to store and retrieve information
YOUR BRAIN RECORDS EVERY MOMENT OF YOUR LIFE
The Brain Is A Voltage Generator. A human being starts the learning process right from the mothers womb and the brain if it can, will start storing this data. The brain of a human being has billions of cells / neurons and each of them has so much of storage capacity that even if the person lives more than a century the capacity never exceeds and every incident, scene, sound, feel, smell and taste gets recorded continuously. But we normally are unable to get the data from our brain unless we start search. The brain works quite similar to our home computers. There are voltages that trigger in and between brain cells. When they go out of control we call that person mentally disabled or disturbed. Even when a normal person gets excited or panic the brain cells discharge voltage uncontrolled and these voltages are so haphazard that our body muscles and organs get confused and do not function as they are supposed to. So we need to control our excitement and emotions.
Why Do We Forget. How will a student learn some thing and will able to find that data in the location where it is stored on a later time. Normally we learn and relearn and revise the same thing repeatedly till we feel we will not forget it. And yet at times we forget what we learned with so much of effort. What then is the way out to retrieve the information stored in your brain easily. By the way when is your birthday? Now do you see how easily I reminded you of the entire scene or evening or day of your so many birthdays that came and went especially the one that went past recently. How did I do this magic? Notice that you never made an attempt to learn, revise or remember that occasion. You just went through those moments and as any other moment the brain kept a record of each of them. And all that I did was to use a word called birthday.
How To Index Events In To Our Brain. Actually what has happened? Your brain indexed this event or scene or moment or day relating or naming it as the word birthday. Very often students do this by using "Mnemonics" or using the first letter of each word or sentence required to be memorise to make a word that can be either spelt or called out. For example I remember using 'Pandith Bhola Prakash Har Har Bol' to remember angles in a triangle. Tan is pandit/Har or Perpendicular/Horizontal. You can consider the brain like a city which has all roads perpendicular to each other and every house is connected by them. How to go to the adress you want to if you are going for the first time. You have to ask and navigate looking at the sign boards. Now you memorise each turn as you go and if you have to reach the same house next time you remember the landmarks at each crossing and after that you are confident of making it with out any aid. You achieved this using a word called practice.
How To Store Information In The Brain. Practice makes one perfect. So to remember any thing or to retrieve any information from your own brain you need to relate it to some thing like a day, incident, event, scene, moment, date, word, person, sound, feel, smell, taste or anything that you feel is important. Then link it to some thing very boring and uninteresting like the page in your text book that you want to study and remember. You dont need to remember the entire route in the city to go to one house. Just remember the start, enroute and end land marks where you have to take turn and you reach you house or cell in your own brain that you wanted to retrieve information from. The other way is what we normally do. Go to the house many times till we can remember the entire route. The choice is yours.
Interest Makes The Target Visible From Anywhere. But if you have an interest in a house you remember it, and reach it without memorising any road or enroute landmarks. Just by being interested you have erected a tall land mark of your own on that house in the city which is very tall and visible from any where you are, making all the other houses transparent and now you can get to it through any road, without requiring any enroute land marks just by looking at it constantly, due to your interest in it. So if you want to remember something like what you study get interested in it.
Don't Make Your Brain A Garbage Bin. You normally waste a lot of time and effort in memorising and revising things. You can continue doing it if you want, even after gaining this knowledge, because as I told you earlier, your brain has lots and lots of rooms to which you can dump any information. It will remain locked because you never indexed its address or remembered to note the land marks to reach back to it. It will be like a book with loads of information on each page but no page number and heading and thus obviously with out an index page which you can refer, to retrieve the information. And now you waste your own time searching each word in each line of each page from one end of the book to the other. Happy hunting for the needle you stored in the hay stack.
Conclusion. Always try to relate one information with another more memorable one. Index each event. Try to retrieve it a few times from your brain the moment it happened. Get interested in the information that you want to retrieve later. Try to make a mental photograph of your information and store it than in words to save effort and better memory retrieval. Use Mnemonics when possible. Play mental games to keep the voltages running in all brain cells and keep the brain sharp and ready to accept information. The brain is too busy a station that controls your whole body function so give it adequate rest and cooling periods. Once practiced the brain will auto program things that will need no calculations in the brain. For example you don't fall down when you walk or run or jump as you did in childhood learning to walk. Your brain is the best computer available in the world for you to use. Believe it.
